You're perusing the map before a Trailquest you really hope to do well in and can see a couple of optimum routes...but which is the best and can you cover either route within the time allowed?
The Silva Map Measurer Plus is a digital map measurer designed to solve exactly this type of challenge. It can be set to measure virtually any scale, so whatever the map, it will cope.
You simply enter the base scale of the map to be measured and set it to measure in miles or kilometres. You then enter the average speed you think you can achieve given the terrain and amount of off-road riding involved. If you're an experienced Trailquester you'll already have a good idea of the average speed achievable. If not you really should write down your statistics from previous events and use this to give you an idea.
Running the Map Measurer Plus around each of the possible routes will tell you how far the route is and how long it would take if you achieved your estimated average speed. You can then tweak the route to add or subtract a control visit or two.
The measuring wheel moves beautifully smoothly and it is easy to guide it accurately round all the twists and turns on the route. If you go the wrong way that's no problem, because you can simply run the wheel backwards and subtract the time and distance.
Finding an optimal route that can be achieved in the time allowed is one of the hardest skills to master in Trailquesting, but if you find a shorter route than your competitors, the chances are you will beat even riders who are fitter than you. Therefore we rate the Silva Map Measurer Plus as an essential planning tool.
